We’ve all experienced it at least once. You’re in bed, but you’re just unable to fall asleep. Your mind is making overtime and the thoughts just seem to keep on popping up into your head. The longer it takes for you to fall asleep the more frustrated you’re starting to feel. Tossing and turning until at some point, you just give up.
Having trouble sleeping is normal and actually pretty easy to overcome. Unless you keep on fighting yourself. The more you fight yourself, the more you prepare your mind and body for action. The adrenaline rush that you are creating with that aggression towards yourself is the same adrenaline that is there to save you when your life is in danger. Your body will not allow you to sleep when it thinks its endangered. If you feel frustrated, either get your ass out of that bad or take a deep breath and let that feeling go. Don’t let the anxiety take over. Do something relaxing like drinking a cup of tea or having a bath. Not ready to give up yet? Follow these 5 tips to sleep like a baby.
Must Read – Break The Circle
1. Lose the social behaviour
Stop all the socially accepted behavior a few hours before you go to sleep. Stop drinking coffee, turn off your TV and close that damn Facebook window on your phone. The combination of caffeine and the bright light of your TV / phone screen will tell your body that it’s time to wake up, which makes sleeping more difficult.
2. The relaxing breath
This technique (as by Weil) is shockingly simple. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.
3. Let your thoughts go
Thinking seems to be one of the biggest issues keeping you awake. Thoughts just keep on coming and you can’t let them go. But the trick is that you can. Either keep a notebook next to your bed and write them down, or use your breathing to let them go. With every exhale, let go of the thought you’ve been holding on to. No matter how important it may seem, it will be there waiting for you in the morning. Inhale, exhale and let go of that thought. It might pop right back up, but the next exhale is right around the corner to release it.
4. The body-scan
Take a mental trip throughout your body. Close your eyes and get to a position you feel comfortable in. All you need to do, is to be aware of your breathing and slowly scan through your body. See how the body is feeling, without hanging on to a particular sensation. If you find a painful area, don’t try to find a solution. Just let it all be. Run through each part of the body, paying special attention to the way each area feels. From your toes to the rest of your feet, to your lower legs, your knees, your thighs and all the way up to the tip of your head.
5. Visit your happy place
Imagine a place that you feel most comfortable in. Peaceful, serene and fulfilled with happiness. Whether it’s a mountain lake, a city apartment or swimming in the ocean. It doesn’t have to be real, it doesn’t have to be a place you’ve once visited. As long as it makes you feel happy and peaceful. Imagine swimming with whales or lying in the sun at a beach. My happy place for example is on the back of a horse, riding through the meadows with no need of control. Once I imagine myself on the back of that horse, galloping away, leaving the whole world behind us, I fall asleep within 5 minutes.
